I had the opportunity to finally meet one of our own “Chance” at the AIr Races last week. I knew that he had a piece of property north of Reno but had no idea how beautiful it was.
Chance has a very large chunk of property in paradise. Anyhow, I took off this morning with the mission to continue my break in on the new engine…so, I figured I would go north to see “Rymes” in Susanville and see if I could spot “Chances” ranch.
Long story short, I made a call to Chance as I flew over what I thought was his area. His wife answered and said “I just heard a plane fly by”…well… “that was me I said.” She responded with “He is out in the grey Jeep and you may see him if you fly by.”
I suddenly had a purpose. I was now looking for a grey jeep. Again, long story short, I found the grey jeep and a guy waiving at me. The wave was from Chance. I made a fly by around the jeep he was in and then watched him park in a manner that I knew was a landing spot. Well, I landed, had an opportunity to visit with him for a bit and then off I went.
It was great seeing you Chance! I am already looking forward to coming back!
Chances barn that was built when Lincoln was President
Driving back out to the field…he owns almost all of the land in this photo, except for the mountain in the distance

Sure is good to be flying again!!!
Left Chances place and did some stall work on my way back to the hanger. The wing does not stall…well, it buffets at around 40mph…Still had real good authority of the wings and rudder control. The set up just amazes me as I am now starting to sound like a broken record. I am wondering what the VG’s will do…
I have read a lot about the Micro VG’s on the Sportsman not being friendly. I cannot imagine the wing handling better than it is now but…I need to find out for myself. I can always take them off…It just feels like I have this huge stable platform out there. I was making slow turns (coordinated) and throwing in (uncoordinated) turns with a 30 degree bank with full control at 45-50. My stall horn goes off at 55. I ended up pulling the fuse as it was making me crazy.
Anyone out there have the WingX, Sportsman with VG experience? I will soon…
Off to Mexico in the am. Back Thursday…

Big day today. Put several hours on her and gave her an oil and first filter change. I am continued to be baffled by this new wing with the Sportsman and Wing X….For those of you that do know, I just cannot explain it. Its incredible to say the least. Here are a few photos from the day.
A couple photos of the filter…Very clean! There were a few fragments of gunk but Steve Knopp said don’t be alarmed when you see all the crap come out of the first filter change…We did not see much…
A then, flying her back to her hanger in Truckee…I am not that big (6’2) but you can see in this photo why I turned my yokes upside down. They just dont feel correct the other way…
It was a good day. Back at it in the AM.
I wish I could come fly with you guys this weekend Rob! This next week is my anniversary and I owe a lot to my wife for giving me so much time to do this without hassle (most of the time)…even more so when I showed her the final bill for all of this today. She has us going to Mexico on Saturday until next Thursday. Wish I could stay and fly but Cabo will be fun.
Already looking forward to the morning…Maybe headed to the lower elevations just to the east…

Checkout this video of the new Highlander! 18″ of travel on the landing gear. It can take a beating.
Just a real good story. This is a must read!!! Ever wonder what it like to bail out at 730 mph from an F15 Eagle? This guy also flies a Cessna 170.

After meeting him in Reno this weekend I was truly inspired to hear more about his story that I personally find, just amazing.
Jon Counsell, call sign “Jughead” has a real flying story. I came home from the races that day and googled, searched and continued to search to find really not that much on him, but then this am, out of pure infectious inspiration (I would give anything to fly a fast jet like the F15) I found this article on his story.
He bailed out of his F15 at around 730mph (thats around mach 1.3 or 1.4)…

The story gets even better with the recovery, self conviction etc. If your into flying or self motivation this is a very good short read. Check it out. This gentleman needs to be our presenter at JC next year! He can come heli-skiing anytime he wants in my book!
It was my pleasure to meet him!

I should have posted this a few days ago but the air races have taken my attention away. Anyway, link lots going on in the world of aviation around these parts. I will be posting a bunch of stuff over the next few days. Oh yes, sildenafil Strega (the worlds fasted P51 mustang put up 498mph today at the races!
Here is a video of my first flight with the new plane…
and a few photos….She has been in good company!
She did however fire up like a brand new engine and purrrrrred like a kitten. Man she sounds good. Had a small leak but that was due to a loose fitting that was not tight and she even got weighed. The only reason we did not fly was due to the VERY HEAVY WIND and thunder storms in the Sierra’s today. Currently raining hard as I type this.
Here is my day…cowling and all fluids in (including the unusable fuel)
Getting weighed along with new ARM, DATUM, etc.
Whats that little blue box going to say?
(Sorry SOY…its like the shell game
)
Here you go…..drum roll pleeeeeease….
With the MT prop she will be under 1800# we are assuming…Anxious to see how much she will weigh with that prop and spinner…
So having not gone back through here…who is the winner on the weight game?
And then…she was rolled out of the hanger…
and then became very
as it was blowing so hard across the runway…we pushed her back into the hanger…
Pretty fired up to say the least….
Yes Brian…I will be flying with you guys NEXT weekend! This weekend I will be doing circles around the airport very low to the ground at full throttle for as many hours as my tail feathers will take for the break in process…
To answer another question, I kept my exhaust (per Steve Knopp’s request) as he said mine was in great shape and to spend the money on gas.
